I attempted another 2.2-ALPHA install last night and left to go sleep.
I just came in and turned on the monitor to find this

Attempting to install all selected distributions..
Fatal signal 11 caught! I'm dead..

I installed as follows
#1 used fdisk to clear drive completely
#2 made a 106 meg dos partition (i chose 100 fdisk gave me 106)
#3 mark it active and format it.
#4 boot to see if it works
#5 install freebsd from boot floppy and ftp5.freebsd.org
#6 selected custom.
#7 selected bin,des,dict,doc,games,info,man,src,xfree86
#8 committed.
#9 watched some of the install and went off to bed.

The last thing installed on tty2 was:

(alot of stuff in secure/usr.bin/telnet)
secure/usr.sbin/xntpd/lib/authdes.c
141 blocks

My system info
p5-166
16megs of memory
adaptec scsi 2940
2gig drive
scsi cdrom

no problems were encountered with the old OS (2.2-1014-SNAP)

I am going to leave the machine up for about 24hours in case anyone want
me to give more info. After that I am going to try again from another
ftp site since both my distributions were from ftp5.

thanks for any help or pointers.
