It is a separate issue but I'll note that
(some?) C++ compilers reject the use of the
enum syntax that is in one of the anonymous
struct's in the union. A report about this
appeared on the lists before I figured out
what I reported in 220404.

Likely the header in question should be
usable from C and from C++.
