I did some more testing, and it just gets weirder: Running from /usr/tmp does not work. Running from /usr/tmp2 does work (tmp2 could be anything). When running from /usr/tmp a ktrace shows that the JDK (I assume?) does some stats on /usr/tmp but for some reason is not satisfied and resorts to /var/tmp (which I have not specified anywhere, AFAIK).
