Hi,

the problem is that Tech Giants don't want an open source competitor in
the smartphone arena and will do anything to stop any attempt to build
an open source smartphone.

Yet, designing and producing a community driven smartphone is difficult
because it costs a lot of money.

5G chips has many royalties to deal with and it's not that sure that
Qualcomm will sell his modems to an open source project.

Raspberry PI is a notable exception but:

1. It's not an open source platform

2. It's a semi-finished product and doesn't come with a case

3. I really would like to read the CE and FCC test reports....

The open source community might start an open source phone with, at
least initially, a WiFi interface.
