Problem solved. It's a bit embarassing, but it turned
out that it was a script which caused the high load.
The script did unfortunately not bail out when a
required condition was not satisfied. It queried the
postgresql-server, and one thing led to the other.

I (re)wrote the script, and it's now working as
intended.
