Just curious, why would PCI be a bad choice? Some newer motherboards have no ISA
slots at all. Would FreeBSD have any problems with non-Winmodem PCI modems?

It's not a Winmodem.

Regarding external modems, the annoying thing about them is that who knows how
long the power adapter is gonna last.
