I finally figured out my problem installing the new APACHE 1.2.4 via
PORTS or via APACHE source/binaries......
THERE ARE NO "default" .CONF files as part of the distribution ( as they
always were before...), they are
.conf-dist (duh!)
THOSE files are exactly where httpd looks for .conf .... so copying my
OLD .conf files into that sub-dir SOLVED the problem.
Sometimes you can see the forest for the "-dist".
