I use a Scanjet 4P on my FreeBSD box and it works great - many of the
pictures at www.freebsd.org were scanned in with it.

No, you need to (as I have) buy xvscan for what is a very reasonable
price or settle for greatly reduced functionality with the `hpscan'
port in /usr/ports/graphics (which I beat on a bit when I first got
my scanner and is at least functional).
