Or drink a pot of coffee. ;) I've never been so unfortuneate to have this bad of luck with mergemaster... It sounds like it somehow left you with no passwd file. (I thought the worst case would be a default passwd file - local accounts...) Grab a template from /usr/src/etc/master.passwd, merge your local account, and you should be good to go. (Default group, etc. files are there too.)
