If you use the current vmware port, it will run just fine on 4.1-RELEASE if you merely add /modules/if_tap.ko. That's the only thing that didn't make it into RELENG_4 in time for 4.1 (besides, obviously, the updated vmware2 port). If you wish, you can make if_tap.ko by just checking out the module makefile and /sys/net/if_tap* from RELENG_4. From your operational perspective, if you're willing to kldload vmmon and vmnet, if_tap shouldn't give you any trouble. :-) That advise may not hold forever. But it is certainly true now.
