Personally I'm on Matts side..
it makes it a lot safer re; allowing the compiler to check things
if we have a union for the common cases.. if you do have your own 
module that needs to use the void * then fine, you can still use it but
this makes debugging easier (gdb can followw teh links easier)
and reduces likelyhood of errors.
