woohoo!  that did it.  I was nervous about rebooting after a failed
make installworld, but it seems that's what it took.  The new kernel
has no brandelf problems and the subsequent make installworld went
flawlessly.  I'm gonna go thru the process agin just to be safe, but
looks like I'm in the clear.  Thanks for the help.
