Well, I don't have exact numbers, but I do have a bit of experience with 
this.  I tried a 40gb IDE maxtor drive in my Miata and it did not work, 
however a 13gb IDE drive worked fine.  So I presume there is a limitation 
of about 26gb or so.  

Nothing precise, but my two cents.
