Once apon a time, the AT&T-derived VAX compiler used an assembler post-processor, and this flag used to cause compilation to bypass the assembler post-processor and use the directly generated code. This was to compensate for the lack of 'volatile' flags in the language at the time. It's safe to delete this from all branches, at least as far back as 2.0.
