I generally use --posix (pax format) when it comes to backups, path length is (was) another reason. Hopefully I'll find some time in early winter to work on some of my own (easy-skill) topics, but I guess a proper fix isn't most trivial for this one. What I also remember is that pax(1) - natively providing the only storage format suitable to do backups - doesn't utilize libarchive(3). Not sure if this has changed meanwhile. I was off from such topics for a while and not sure if libarchive(3) is the place to fix tar(1), which got high frequency updates back then.
