Dave, I don't know if this'll work in your situation, but it works great for us. We've got a second drive in our FBSD box that gets cloned/updated with dump(8) on a regular basis. If we lose the primary drive, we can boot off the backup drive and go. We've also got our drives in removable sleds, so if the machine itself goes kaput, we pop the drive in another box. All of this is, of course, on-site, so we have to make a tape for off-site backup, but less frequently.
