Nohup, disown, whatever.  If you want to do it with processes that are
(and need to be) attached to a tty, and be able to retrieve them
later, use screen (from ports).  If you want to do the same with X
applications, use vnc or something similar to virtualize the X server,
so you can reconnect when you log back on.
