The priority is only used when there are more than one mailhosts.
Otherwise the value doesn't matter much.

Telnetting is a good idea but use the help function of
sendmail. In this case it ought to be something like
'vrfy johpe@bitmap.com' you want to give and then watch
the result code.

Anyway, it looks like a sendmail problem. Maybe the security as
in /etc/mail.
