Isn't this in a FAQ somewhere?
You're using some program (most likely an xterm from what you've got
running there) that is trashing utmp because it is compiled for 8
character user names, and 3.0-CURRENT uses 16 (or was it 15?). Either way,
recompile your programs that use utmp.
