It is apparently a long standing bug, but noone with sufficent knowledge of
the ATAPI inner working seems to be able to reproduce or investigate it.

In my case jumpering the CD-ROM to become slave instead of master on its IDE
bus fixed the problem, other people had not been as lucky.
