/usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk has things like:

OPSYS!=	${UNAME} -s
and:
_OSRELEASE!=	${UNAME} -r

Is your ${ECHO} note specific to the combination of ${ECHO} and !=
for some reason --or does it apply to the likes of ${UNAME} mixed
with != too?
