Newer bios-es have USB stack's which allow you to boot from a USB floppy drive - and I found that almost all cdrom drive's you can boot from will allow you to install freebsd. It is easy to try - get one from walnutcreek - or burn one - and simply boot from it. The install process asks you a very clear and explicit go/no-go before it wipes your disk - so you can test and reassure yourself that it works before taking the plunge.
