During my years with a University's Faculty of Management and Information
Sciences: the name was, internally, commonly abbreviated to MIS but _never_
mispronounced "miss". Always "M I S". 

Similarly, I never heard anyone say "mitt" with reference to Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. Always "M I T". 

The word NIS appears with NFS often enough for me to believe that "niss" would
sound peculiar. I rarely hear NIS spoken, I do recall hearing the "N I S"
pronunciation. 

A number of well-known educational institutions and other organisations use the
phrase 'an NIS'. This number is large enough for me to believe that it is an
acceptable norm. In no particular order, but beginning with MIT:
