I have loaded those modules, too. However, I see the gears spinning in
glxgears (ca. 920 FPS, but that's more or less unimportant :-P). Don't
know about supertux2 as I don't have it installed.

Same here:
$ glxinfo | grep rendering
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x64
direct rendering: Yes

I did a quick search and I got a lot of results related to Compiz and
AIGLX -- I'm even more confused now as I have neither of them
installed... Can somebody with more wisdom shed some light on this please?
I'm using a Radeon 9250 if that matters (from pciconf):
vgapci0@pci0:1:0:0: class=0x030000 card=0x1013196d chip=0x59601002
rev=0x01 hdr=0x00
vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc'
device = 'RV280 Radeon 9200 Pro'
class = display
subclass = VGA
vgapci1@pci0:1:0:1: class=0x038000 card=0x1012196d chip=0x59401002
rev=0x01 hdr=0x00
vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc'
device = 'RV280 Radeon 9200 Pro - Secondary'
class = display

Philipp
