Hi, there, I just read your post on JDK1.1.8 on FreeBSD 4.8.

I was able to get it to work after running into the problem you described by installing the compatXXX libraries by using /stand/sysinstall --> Configure --> Distributions via FTP. Once this was done, the JDK BINARY release worked without any problems.
