As Glen mentioned, this sounds like a bug in 10.1-RELEASE.  Do you specifically need to run that version?

If not, please try something newer, such as 10-STABLE or 11-CURRENT.

I’ve not personally tried eMMC booting in a while (I generally need more disk space than eMMC provides).
