Ah, yes.  A red herring.  I've never tried to build the kernel without a
populated obj tree on the i386.  I have tried this on the Alpha.  I
tried it last week, before the recent move of the module build, and it
didn't work because size and ld were not available in the obj tree.

Fair enough.  However, I read your commit message as saying that it is
now possible to build the kernel without a populated obj tree.  Have you
tried building the kernel in isolation from buildworld, or does your
change only relate to Chuck Robey's recent changes?
