The 2.3 kernel is supposed to be able to handle 4GB, but I don't have a
machine to test with.

Keep up.  Things move fast around here!  Thanks to David Cross and someone
else at RPI, there is one for 4.0.  I don't know how well it works, but it
has to be better than the one in the system already.
