Problem resolved by removing the ncurses libs installed in /usr/lib and symlinking to /usr/local/lib (since the Makefile didn't incude /usr/local/lib in its linker search path). I still don't know why I've seen this on 3 diff. systems... is asome version of ncurses installed in /usr/lib by default?
