Update: Mutt was trying to link against older ncurses libs in /usr/lib
(don't know how they got there; they were v3). Problem resolved by
removing the ncurses libs installed in /usr/lib and symlinking to
/usr/local/lib (since the Makefile didn't incude /usr/local/lib in its
 linker search path).

I still don't know why I've seen this on 3 diff. systems... is asome
version of ncurses installed in /usr/lib by default?
