Actually, my initial description of this problem is inaccurate on one point: There is no volume control except on or off... I get constant full volume when the mixer pcm setting is between 1:1 and 100:100, and no sound when mixer pcm is 0:0. I'm using the standard install of xmms from ports with the standard OSS driver. no modifications, plugins, etc...
