As far as I know, they have no active components (at least, the CF
to PCMCIA adapters I looked at).  They just re-arrange the pinouts from
the CF card to the PCMCIA connecter.  My understanding is that the
CF card is an IDE, electrically.

Last one I bought was around $9 at (I believe) Staples or Office
Max.
