One other thing: it does look like there is work currently in progress for brining kernel oplocks to FreeBSD. Do a search for "oplock" on the last few weeks' samba-devel archives. I'm not sure what list it's being discussed on, but posts from Mr. Lemmon and Mr. Jordan were seen showing in interest in this endeavor. If you are new to samba (as I was 8 weeks ago), make sure to read the smbd.conf man page very carefully. Personally, I think they've gotten a little carried away with trying to get samba to "do the right thing all by its little self". Pay careful attention to wording along the lines of: If <thingX> is available, this configuration directive will default to <stateY> or <thingZ> will not be active regardless if you have also enabled <thingA>. Contact me off-list (admin@eecs.ku.dontspammedammit.edu) if you have other non-bsd related questions. I might at least be able to point you in the right direction.
