If you upgrade any modules, you should upgrade your kernel. Since you're
running -stable, there may be a change that you can just compile
linux.ko with the updated source, although I wouldn't exactly advise
that :-)

You don't necessarily have to upgrade the world if you upgrade the
kernel.
