My upgrade procedure includes:

1. Backup ports with ports/sysutils/portupgrade. (-b switch)
2. Update the ports collection and index
3. Read ports/UPDATING
4. Upgrade and verify each port individually
5. Keep ports/sysutils/portdowngrade handy
