What sort of trouble, and what brand of drives are you using?

And the obvious question: if they are so much trouble, why have you been using
them for years?

The average life of what?  Media or the drive?

Eighteen months is a long time to be keeping regular backups.  Beyond 6-12
months, I call it an archive.
