Thanks!  This is good to know.  For the time being I gave up
on this and bought a $49 CD-R/W drive.  I am not into DVD
ripping or editing home videos so may be a DVD-RAM drive that
can also write DVD-R is good enough for me but I will wait
until there is some more choice.

Agreed.  Actually I'd be happy with any media that can
survive 20 or so years (at which point I'd copy data I care
about on new medium).

Playing DVD movies on FreeBSD works fine if you have a fast
enough machine....
