The step : missing from the original HEADS UP is you have to move kernel.GENERIC to : kernel BEFORE you reboot. This is not done automatically for you. If you have a suggested update to make UPDATING clearer on this, I'll be happy to integrate it. The UPDATING file generally was for -current users that are expected to have a higher level of understanding. Sometimes stable's UPDATING gets similar text and it takes a little time to get it cleaned up.
