I've seen claims that "make world" (which is similar to doing "make buildworld && make installworld") works just fine, and it might do so most of the time, but most people prefer to play it safe and "make buildworld", "make kernel", reboot to check the new kernel, and then "make installworld" (omitting some details which you can easily find with groups.google.com or the FreeBSD handbook.
