However, the point of the ports collection is to collect correct installation procedures for all existant programs that can work on FreeBSD. As such, should any application work on FreeBSD, there should be a port. Obviously, this is not so, but this is due to perceived complexity in the creation of a port. Should you find an application that works on FreeBSD, and for which a port doesn't exist, it's your aim to submit a PR and get it into the ports collection. Think of the ports collection as the equivalent of linuxapps.com - it's purpose is to list all apps that can run on FreeBSD. Linuxapps.com isn't exactly sentient, and thus needs people to submit applications to it. The same applies to the ports collection. There exist people who run through freshmeat.net and try to submit ports to the FreeBSD ports collection. As far as I have seen, any port of any redeeming quality, in the least, that is properly submitted, gets committed. There is a incorrect perception that the ports and package system is substandard, probably based on the lack of quality GUI package management systems. This is probably the cause of the "but, the thing doesn't even come with bash!!!!!!!" (color-ls, &c.) argument.
