Jörg's suggestion is sound   but I still think  it  will be a  nightmare to
maintain,  even more  so than  it  would be with   the full program in  the
tree. Besides, you want the extensions and you want them shared.

What do  people have against  a regular port  ? I know we   have a few Perl
scripts in the tree so we keep the good ol' p4. What do you want everything
in the _base_ dist ?
