Yep, I think VLC has the best VAAPI support, so if you use VLC for everything it should be OK - not having used VAAPI I can't say for sure though. mplayer does not support VAAPI - there were some initial patches provided which are abandonware as far as I can see, and the devs do not appreciate questions about it - I think they do not like that there is this VAAPI tree which builds 'mplayer' but is missing several thousands bug fixes that are in mplayer tip.
