I'm using tcpserver with qmail's virtual pop3 servers. It works perfectly,
although one has go understand the different way of use wrt inetd.

I'd say that tcpserver isn't a replacement for inetd. For some works,
tcpserver is a replacement for inetd + tcpwrappers.
