It was released on June 23, 1999. An earlier beta release of 2.1 did not have the source available (except during a brief window when they accidentally included it), so running the BSD/OS version was an option some people used, IIRC. I've been running with FreeBSD-compiled versions of their radiusd for nearly three years now, with zero hitches. As of 2.1, they even removed the restriction that you had to own a piece of Lucent/Livingston equipment to download the sources, so pretty much anybody can use it.
