It it says it can't swap, then you have booted ok and the BIOS isn't
your problem.  Can you include your /etc/fstab file and the output
of disklabel on your disk?  (I.e., 'disklabel ad0')

That is only for booting, once the kernel is up and running that is
no longer relevant.
