I've the same machine.  But I did put in the frame buffer.  The
X server software supports ZLXp-E1.  I figured I'd give this 
ZLXp-E2 a try.  

However, if it works not even as a character-mode console, that
would explain some of the behavior!  I wonder how I can confirm
this.   Guess I'll dig up some serial connections.  Bummer!
