        There is a lot to be said for:

        Backup all user data.

        Install 4-STABLE on a new machine.

        Copy user data to new machine.

        I think the time it takes to do all the steps you outlined would pay
for a new machine :)

        s/new/existing/ to save money and increase risk :)
