'cat' maybe not so good because the raw data are sometimes interpreted as invisible characters. Try 'moused -d -f -t auto -p /dev/ums0' instead and see what happens when you press buttons. And you did not mentioned where you wanted to use these extra buttons. In X I believe you have to set max button number and blah blah in config file. See the chapter about X and mice in FreeBSD FAQ.
