The other problem (with the firmware crash) could indeed be caused by the AP is announcing VHT on 2.4GHz (which it does). I'll have a look but I likely cannot reproduce this as I do not have an AP doing so. If you have an AP announcing VHT on 2.4Ghz please let us know if iwlwifi works for you with HT/VHT enabled.
