I run on FreeBSD as a development platform, as it gives me the feeling of
stability, familiarity with what we used to work back in school years (SunOS
BSD), the feeling that it is here to stay, the serious attitude of the people
in the FreeBSD world, + plus it fits best the developer with a unix
background who likes to understand whats done behind the scenes.
Talking about java, back in 1.4 days, not many OSs had the easiness
for the developer to browse thru the JDK java sources as in FreeBSD.
(Well back then building from source was the only option, but had a beneficial
side effect!)

Yes

java version "1.5.0" (diablo-1.5.0-b00) ,
java version "1.4.2_12" (linux-sun-jdk1.4.2 1.4.2_12-b03)

back in native 1.4.2 years, it was pain.
Diablo 1.5 was easy

A little, more of a prestige thing, and the feeling that FreeBSD java is alive
and well, rather than a real need.
