Certainly.  My definition of "*safely*" means having a full backup of  
the system to which I can go back to if the OS version upgrade  
doesn't work; if you don't have a good backup, well, you can probably  
update from 5 to 6 just fine, but I would not consider doing so to be  
completely safe.
